US Open dish out the punishment big time

19Sep09

In this age of TV technology and current sports stars angering fans, foul-mouthed tirades at match officials have become the blog du jour for sports press worldwide. However, expecting it from a SATs-challenged footballer is one thing, but….Roger Federer?

Federer, after his crazy ‘hot dog’ effort in the US Open semi-final, was on course for a 6th straight title. Anyway to cut a long story short we all know, he lost in 5 sets vs Juan Martin Del Potro - with a little dig at the umpires too regarding Del Boy’s slow decision making on challenges i think at some point during the 4th set, but it was way past my bed time at this point as the last 3 sets kind of blurred together…

So, after some deliberation, the US Open officials chose to slap the great man’s wrist for his abuse to the chair umpire, which was picked up on the microphones and prompted a hefty $1,500 fine.

Oh crap, $1,500. Well for Federer’s efforts in the tournament, he earned $800,000 as the losing finalist – which meant he had to give up 0.18%* of his paycheque.

I hope for all that Roger can navigate this period of financial ruin and just get back on the court playing and forget about his money issues – for the sake of the game.

*I actually had to do the calculation twice to make sure i’d actually done the x100 bit at the end…
